White iPhone 4′s Could Hit Sales Upto 1.5 million Due To “Scarcity Value”

The wait is finally over and the elusive iPhone 4 in white has finally hit the stores for those who care to get their hands on it. Apple has made us wait for approximately 10 months after they had announced it way back with the release of the black iPhone 4. During all this time the White iPhone 4 was able to gather a little aura of mystique around it and analysts believe that mystique factor could provide a boost for sales.

Just a few days back we informed you about the imminent release of the White iPhone 4 and at the same time we wondered whether consumers would have the same level of interest in buying it that they had when it was originally announced almost a year before. The White iPhone 4 was delayed time and again due to manufacturing difficulties specially due to the white paint mixture itself and was becoming a source of embarrassment for Apple. Although most of the people are of the opinion that they would rather wait for the upcoming next generation iPhone 5, an analyst, Brian White, thinks that the White iPhone 4 has garnered a sort of a “scarcity value” caused because of the recurring delays in its announcement and this factor might be enough to generate sales of upto 1.5 million units.
In an interview with The San Jose Mercury, he said:

The purchase of consumer electronic devices is not always a completely rational decision, and people buy Apple products for many different reasons, including status, aesthetics, functionality, quality and the cool factor.

In our view, this delay has created a certain mystique and scarcity value around the white iPhone 4 that we believe could drive incremental iPhone 4 purchases in the range of 1 million to 1.5 million units per quarter until the iPhone 5 potentially comes to market in September.

Let’s wait how the consumers response turns out but so far it looks as if Apple’s boat is sailing smooth.
