A rather interesting bit of news just caught our eye. It turns out that famous iPhone and PS3 jailbreaker/hacker George Hota a.k.a Geohot has stepped away from the jailbreaking scene and has joined Facebook, the world’s largest social network.
Recently, reports have indicated that Facebook has crossed the 750 million worldwide active monthly users milestone. Roughly, that amounts to about 10% of the whole population on the earth. Its staggering to see how much Facebook has grown in recent years. The company itself hasn’t confirmed the 750 million figure, but then again, no official user stats have come out of Facebook ever since it reached the 500 million user milestone. Logically speaking, it looks like Facebook would like to reach the big 1 billion monthly active user milestone before it releases user stats to the public.
On the other hand, it looks like Geohot has been trying hard to divert public attention way from him ever since he got out of the lawsuit against Sony. Sony sued Geohot for jailbreaking the PlayStation 3, in the aftermath of which the PlayStation Network was hacked and taken down for a long time. Sony Online Entertainment servers were also intruded into.
Joshua Hill, member of the Chronic Dev Team earlier revealed that Geohot has joined Facebook and that he declined to work on an iPad 2 jailbreak. Previously, Joshua Hill a.k.a p0sixninja challenged Geohot to dump the A5 (iPad2) bootrom faster than he could. While months have passed since that happened, there has still not been a word spoken about Geohot iPad 2 jailbreak and now it looks like an iPad 2 jailbreak developed by Geohot might not exist, ever.
It is still not known what Geohot’s position is at Facebook. Rumors circulating the internet claim that he may be working with Facebook to develop the social network’s dedicated iPad app.
So finally, it looks like George Hotz has stepped out of the jailbreaking and hacking ring. What would compel a hacking maestro to do that? Did the lawsuit with Sony make Geohot mend his ways? These are questions that he alone, can best answer. We can only hope for an awesome Facebook for iPad app now.
