Facebook has now confirmed that famous iPhone and PS3 jailbreaker/hacker George Hotz a.k.a Geohot has been hired by them. Previously a week ago, rumours starting circulating the web that maybe Geohot had deviated away from his jailbreaking ways and had joined Facebook. Well now, that has been confirmed.
It is not yet known what position Geohot has been given at Facebook, the world’s largest social network which according to a recent estimate brings in 750 million monthly active users. Regardless of confirming that they have hired Geohot, Facebook has decided against revealing his duties. Supposedly, Geohot is working on the team given the task to develop a dedicated Facebook for iPad app. Or maybe, he might just be working in the mobile development department.
Joshua Hill, member of the Chronic Dev Team in a video conference with Craig Fox, organizer of the world’s first jailbreak convention MyGreatFest (of which ChipHazard is a sponsor) earlier revealed that Geohot has joined Facebook and that he declined to work on an iPad 2 jailbreak. Previously, Joshua Hill a.k.a p0sixninja challenged Geohot to dump the A5 (iPad2) bootrom faster than he could. While months have passed since that happened, there has still not been a word spoken about Geohot iPad 2 jailbreak and now it looks like an those who have been waiting on Geohot to release an iPad 2 jailbreak, might never get their hands on it.
Geohot came into the spotlight when he first unlocked the iPhone. Since then, he has been a household name in the jailbreaking community. Geohot had been involved with the community and had recently managed to jailbreak the PlayStation 3 which got him in legal trouble with Sony. Sony sued Geohot over this, but later the lawsuit was settled out of court, on the premise that he would never jailbreak Sony’s console. Naturally, Geohot agreed.
Ever since then, Geohot has thinned down his public appearances. Earlier this year, he also withdrew from annual Pwn2Own hacking competition, just because of the lawsuit against Sony. Looks like Geohot has stepped out of the hacking arena for good. However, we wish him all the best for his new desk job.
