Facebook is reportedly working with the mobile manufacturer HTC on its first official mobile phone code-name ”Buffy” .
Facebook previously denied that it was making a phone but never said anything about not making it via third party mobile manufacturer.
A spokesman for Facebook told AllThingsD :-
Our mobile strategy is simple: We think every mobile device is better if it is deeply social. We’re working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers, and application developers to bring powerful social experiences to more people around the world.
Facebook phone will run on a revised version of Google Android and Facebook has reportedly tweaked Android to integrate its services to the core. Facebook Cheif technology officer Bret Taylor is reportedly said to be leading the project.
Even though Facebook claims that it has over 350 million mobile users, its just an app which people use to find track and interact with people and post updates about themselves but when it comes to mobile phones, its tough to see Facebook’s future in the era where Apple and Google rule the OS world for smartphones.
Facebook would have to make a very attractive and powerful smartphone to compete with its future rivals in the smartphone bussiness Apple and Google who are dedicated in the field of OS development and have experience.
Hopefully Facebook wouldn’t rely just on its popularity and bring something unique to the table to lure the customers into buying a smartphone in such a competitive environment.
