How To Make Chrome Default Browser (sort of) On iOS Devices Without Jailbreak

We previously covered the way of making Chrome the default browser on iOS devices but that applies to Jailbroken devices only. Google Chrome is what everybody wants in their mobile devices and so does iOS users. Keeping in mind the needs of non-jailbreak iOS users, devs have come out a way through which you can somewhat make Chrome your default browser.

You must be now wondering what “sort of” means in the post’s title?. Well a developer named Jon Abrams has published a JavaScript code, which when saved as a Safari bookmark, will allow any webpage in Mobile Safari to be passed directly on to Google Chrome. Hence you won’t exactly be opening links on Chrome first hand but ultimately your links would be opened in that browser.

Following is the step-by-step guide through which you can make this happen :-

Step 1: Copy this Javascript code to clipboard : javascript:location.href=”googlechrome”+location.href.substring(4);

Step 2: Open up Mobile Safari on your iOS device, navigate to any webpage, save it as a bookmark and give it the name ‘Open Chrome‘.

Step 3: Now select that saved bookmark and tap ‘Edit‘ option. Edit the saved bookmark by deleting the URL string from within it and paste in the copied JavaScript code string from step 1 and then save it.

Now whenever you want to open a link on Chrome, first Safari would open that link and upon it opening, select the option  bookmark and tap “Open Chrome” which would pass the current webpage to Chrome.

This method is no where near the jailbreak solution but at the moment you’ll have to live with it. Apple will most probably never add the option of selecting a custom browser as a default option, since it doesn’t wants any competition (especially Google) to rule iOS device (unless offcourse Apple’s narrow-minded approach leads to the downfall of the company).
