Imagination Technologies is a company that specializes in making PoweVR series GPUs that could be find in mobile devices like iPhone/iPad etc which yields impressive raw performance. Recently, the company announced their latest creation, the PowerVR G6630 which is not only the fastest GPU they’ve ever designed, but is also according to them 60x faster than their previous generation cores.
When it comes to mobile GPUs, mostly NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 or Mali’s T series remain supreme, but with Imagination Technologies announcement, it looks like it’s going to decimate all of its competitors with a huge blow. Specs wise, PowerVR Series6 GPU will have six cores which are designed to offer raw processing performance from 100GFLOPS to more than 1 TFLOPs.
PowerVR Series6 GPUs deliver full support for all popular and emerging GPU compute APIs including OpenCL 1.x and Renderscript Compute, delivering an optimal balance of performance versus power consumption for mobile and embedded devices.
All members of the Series6 family are designed to support all features of the latest graphics APIs including OpenGL ES 3*/2/1.1, OpenGL 3.x/4.x, and full WHQL-compliant DirectX10, with certain family members extending their capabilities to DirectX11.1 functionality.
On paper these specs and performance estimate looks incredible but the real question that remains is,when it’ll house in high-end smartphones?. Well according to them production would start next year and we’ll be seeing devices with these GPUs later next year. This seems quite logical since 2013 will mark an era for the evolution of 1080p smartphones (except iPhone offcourse) and while all major GPU manufacturers are gearing up to use their next-gen Graphics chip, sixth-gen PowerVR GPUs are most likely to be seen.
